Local Spotlight: Fal River

October 2, 2026 | News

Continuing our Local Spotlight series, we’re taking to the water with Fal River, connecting Falmouth with some of the loveliest corners of the river, estuary and Roseland Peninsula.

Here in Falmouth, the water is part of everyday life. Boats criss-cross the harbour, ferries come and go from the town’s piers and beyond the headland, the Fal winds its way past wooded creeks, riverside villages and some of Cornwall’s most beautiful landscapes.

Fal River brings much of it together, with a network of ferries and boat trips making it wonderfully easy to leave the car behind and see our corner of Cornwall from the water. Whether you’re hopping across to St Mawes for lunch, sailing upriver towards Trelissick or simply sitting back and enjoying the view, sometimes the journey is every bit as memorable as the destination.

Life On The Fal

There’s something rather special about exploring Cornwall by boat.

The Fal River runs through the beautiful landscape surrounding Falmouth, linking the town with waterside communities, gardens, countryside and the Roseland Peninsula. Its ferry network has long been part of life here, and today it offers visitors one of the loveliest ways to get around.

From Falmouth, you can step aboard with no need for a carefully planned road trip. Instead, find a seat on deck and watch the shoreline unfold as harbour views give way to wooded banks, hidden creeks and boats bobbing on the water.

For guests staying with us at The Falmouth, it’s a chance to experience our maritime home as it was meant to be seen – from the water.

Sail Across To St Mawes

Just across the water, the pretty harbour village of St Mawes feels like a world away – yet the ferry journey from Falmouth takes around 20 minutes.

Running throughout the year, the St Mawes Ferry connects the town with the Roseland Peninsula, making it easy to swap Falmouth’s bustling streets for a few leisurely hours on the opposite shore.

Once there, wander along the waterfront, stop for lunch overlooking the harbour or explore the village before making your way back to the quay. The crossing itself is part of the pleasure, with views across Carrick Roads and the surrounding coastline as you sail.

It’s the kind of simple Cornish day out we never tire of: no car, no rush and plenty of sea air along the way.

Follow The River To Trelissick

For a longer adventure, Enterprise Boats sail from Falmouth along the Fal towards Trelissick and Malpas during the main season.

This is Cornwall at its most peaceful. The route follows the river through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, passing wooded valleys, historic houses and the ever-changing activity of the water along the way.

Hop off at Trelissick and make your way up to the National Trust estate, where gardens and countryside overlook the Fal, or simply enjoy the voyage itself. On selected high tides, special sailings continue all the way to Truro, offering a rather different way to reach Cornwall’s cathedral city.

With classic boats, changing river views and nowhere to be except your next stop, it’s a lovely reminder that sometimes slowing down is the best way to explore.

Take The Scenic Route

The river doesn’t just connect places by passenger boat. Further upstream, the King Harry Ferry has been carrying people across the Fal for generations.

The crossing between Feock and Philleigh takes around ten minutes, with the chain ferry providing a scenic link between the Truro and Falmouth side of the river and the Roseland Peninsula.

It’s one of those wonderfully Cornish experiences where a practical journey becomes part of the day out. Roll aboard, pause for views across the water and continue your adventure on the other side, with the Roseland’s villages, coves and countryside waiting to be explored.

One Card, Plenty To Explore

If you’re planning to spend a few days exploring, the Fal Mussel Card Visitor makes hopping between destinations even easier.

Available for different lengths of stay, the card includes unlimited travel on a selection of ferries, buses and trains around the Fal River area. That means you can build a day around the journey rather than the car – perhaps sailing to St Mawes one morning, heading towards Trelissick the next and using local transport to discover somewhere new in between.

It’s a particularly handy option for guests who want to see more of the area while leaving the driving behind.
