Local Spotlight: National Maritime Museum Cornwall

June 4, 2026 | News

Continuing our Local Spotlight series, we’re shining a light on one of Falmouth’s most celebrated attractions: National Maritime Museum Cornwall.

There’s something wonderfully fitting about discovering the stories of the sea whilst staying beside it. Just a short stroll from The Falmouth, National Maritime Museum Cornwall offers a fascinating insight into Cornwall’s deep-rooted maritime heritage. Expect hands-on exhibits, family adventures and world-class exhibitions.

Whether you’re visiting Falmouth for the first time or returning to your favourite corner of Cornwall, the museum is a fantastic way to spend a few hours exploring the county’s unique relationship with the ocean.

Perfectly positioned on Falmouth’s waterfront, National Maritime Museum Cornwall has been inspiring curiosity about the sea since opening its doors in 2003.

Through an ever-changing programme of exhibitions, interactive displays and historical collections, the museum explores Cornwall’s maritime past, present and future. From local fishing traditions and boatbuilding heritage to stories of exploration, rescue and adventure, every visit offers something new to discover.

What makes the museum particularly special is its ability to bring global maritime stories to Cornwall, whilst celebrating the county’s own rich seafaring history.

Visiting Today: What to Expect

Spread across several floors, the museum combines fascinating exhibitions with plenty of opportunities to get hands-on.

Highlights include:

  • The spectacular Boat Hall, home to a flotilla of historic boats suspended overhead
  • The Boat Pool, where visitors can take the helm of remote-controlled boats
  • The RNLI Rescue Zone, celebrating the incredible work of the RNLI through interactive displays
  • The Tidal Zone, offering a unique underwater view of Falmouth Harbour
  • The Lookout Tower, with panoramic views across the harbour, estuary and coastline
  • The Boatbuilding Gallery and Workshop, where visitors can watch traditional craftsmanship in action

Families will also love the Skull Island Play Zone, where young adventurers can embrace their inner pirate and let their imaginations run wild.

What’s On This Summer

Alongside its permanent galleries, the museum hosts a vibrant programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year.

One of the current highlights is SURF!, a major exhibition celebrating a century of surfing in Cornwall. Running until January 2027, the exhibition explores the people, places and culture that helped shape Cornwall into one of the world’s most celebrated surfing destinations.

Visitors can also enjoy Surfing Memories, a community exhibition sharing photographs and personal stories from generations of surfing holidays in Cornwall.

Throughout the summer holidays, the museum will host Maritime Adventures, a programme of family-friendly activities designed to encourage exploration, creativity and discovery.

For younger visitors, regular Minnows Tales storytelling sessions and Minnows Makes craft workshops offer plenty of opportunities to get involved.
