My studio is based at home here in Falmouth. There’s a slither of a sea view over the bay and another towards castle beach. Here I can watch the weather and sea conditions change throughout the day.
Meet Local Falmouth Artist, Sarah
A talented local Falmouth artist and illustrator of the natural world, we were delighted to be able to display some of Sarah’s incredible work in our hotel. We caught up with her to find out more about her wonderful talent and the inspirations she takes from around Falmouth.
Sarah Jane Humphrey illustrates the natural world, and Falmouth’s wildlife and coastal scenery provides her with a wealth of inspiration. She was the first female Scientific and Natural History Illustrator to be represented by the Wildlife Art Company, and has won a Gold Medal Award from the Royal Horticultural Society. Sarah uses various mediums for her botanical illustrations, creating works that immerse their viewers in coastal horticulture. With her work now on display at The Falmouth, we couldn’t resist getting to know this local Falmouth artist.
Tell me a bit about where your studio is based
What do you think it is about Falmouth’s natural world that inspires your work?
Falmouth has its own micro climate. This makes it possible for so many plants both on land and sea to thrive here. I love the tropical nature of much of our gardens. Even on the dullest day they’re lush and verdant. As for the wild coastal plants and seaweed, they are something to be marvelled at. We really are incredibly lucky.
What were your impressions of The Falmouth Hotel when you came to see us?
Living so close by I am excited to see what will come next. It’s been a shame to see such an iconic and historical building slowly fall into disrepair. It is so lovely to see a buzz of activity and new plans beginning to unfold.
Where is your favourite place in Cornwall, and why?
I’m probably happiest here at Castle Beach… A day spent sketching and reading, dipping in and out of the sea on a high tide – it’s idyllic and it’s home.
