Nine Ways To Embrace Wellness In Falmouth

January 7, 2025 | News

If you’re feeling like it’s time to press pause and reset as we step into a new year, we’ve got some top tips to help you improve your health, right here in Falmouth.

Walking the Cornish coastline

Whether you’re one for a leisurely stroll with the dog at your side, or a pulse-quickening dash with your headphones on, where could be better to put one foot in front of the other than right here on the Cornish coast?

With The Falmouth as your starting point, you can follow Falmouth’s breath-taking seafront and let the fresh sea-salt air blow away the stresses of 2024. Make your way past Castle Beach with the ocean on your left, and it won’t be long before you’re wandering across the sands of Gyllyngvase Beach. If you carry on over the hill along the coast path you’ll find yourself at Swan Pool Beach.

Want to take it even further? If you complete a lap of Swanpool before returning along the trail back to The Falmouth, you’ll have walked (or run) 5K!

With plenty of options available when it comes to exploring the Cornish coast, don’t forget to read up on all you need to know to stay safe while you explore.

Cold-water swimming

Now quite a popular pastime here in Cornwall, cold-water swimming brings with it a wealth of health benefits – if you’re brave enough to dip your toe. From improving mental health and lowering stress levels to helping with blood pressure, circulation and even boosting your immune system, it seems chilly salt water has its perks.

On calm days, Castle Beach is perfect for seasoned dippers, but the quiet harbour shelter that our sister hotel The Greenbank provides might be more suitable for those who aren’t as experienced.

Before trying cold-water swimming, make sure to read up on the RNLI’s safety tips. You may like to wear wetsuit boots and gloves, but always take your time getting in, and don’t stay in too long.

RELAX IN THE SAUNA

Feeling a little chilly? A spell in the sauna at The Falmouth is a certain cure for the chills, and comes with its own list of improvements to your health.

Regular use of a sauna is thought to be associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as contributing to lower blood pressure, alleviating muscle tension and arthritis, and helping to soothe skin conditions.

Stress relief is usually at the top of the list when it comes to stepping into the sauna for some time to yourself, and it’s little moments like this that can make all the difference when it comes to your mental health.

If you’ll be joining us for some time in the sauna this year, remember to stay hydrated, limit your session to 10 or 20 minutes at a time, and listen to your body.

Yoga, meditation and massage

If you’re looking to align mind and body, yoga could well be your answer. Built on the three main principles of movement, breathing and meditation, yoga is an excellent way to ground yourself and detach from the stresses of day-to-day life.

With a fully equipped studio over at Sunshine Café and Yoga in Penryn, you can access guided classes from skilled and qualified teachers throughout the year. From vinyasa and slow flow to yin and restorative sessions – it’s an all-levels kind of scene.

Now with a Healing Room in which to let go, restore and heal, you can work on your physical health with a sports, deep tissue or soft tissue massage at the hands of an expert practitioner.

Visit the pool

If you don’t fancy a cold-water dip in the big blue, why not retreat to the heated sanctuary of The Falmouth’s indoor pool? Twelve metres in length and located right next to our sauna, immerse yourself in the warm waters for a spot of you time.

Whether you’re one for lengthy laps or prefer a slower pace, even a gentle swim can burn up to 200 calories in half an hour.

Sometimes even just taking time to float can help to reduce your stress levels and bring you back to you before the end of the day.

With adult-only swim sessions from 7am to 9am, and 6pm to 9pm, make sure to check pool availability and book online before paying us a visit.

Join the gym

The hardest part of any health journey is getting started, and sometimes the thought of joining a gym can feel a little daunting. However, with a fresh new look, some brand-new equipment and a chilled, friendly vibe at the heart of it all, the gym at The Falmouth was made for you to set the pace.

Whether you’re on a mission to meet your 2025 goals or you’re just looking to get a feel for movement again, a membership at The Falmouth makes for a great opportunity to get started on your way to feeling good.

With proven benefits when it comes to cardiovascular health, bone and muscle strength, weight management, and improved brain health, mood and concentration, there really are no down sides!

Have a go at water sports

Edged with ocean for miles around, it’s no wonder that Cornwall is a hotspot for water sports of all kinds throughout the year. Whilst a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the Cornish landscape, it’s also a great way to get those endorphins flowing and work on your fitness levels.

From surfing and sea kayaking to sailing and stand-up paddleboarding, there’s something for everyone to try these days, and plenty of guidance out there on how to get started. For instance, Falmouth River Watersports are wonderful guides to get you on track to a new favourite hobby if you prefer the stillness of the River Fal. Or, why not head down to Swanpool Beach and find adventure with Elemental UK?

For fun in the sea during winter you’ll need a good wetsuit and to exercise caution in the cold water. Follow RNLI’s helpful tips to stay safe.

Explore some healthy meals

Living a healthy lifestyle all starts with what we put into our bodies, but smarter eating doesn’t have to mean fewer flavours.

Over in our Castle View restaurant, our expert team of chefs have put together a culinary showcase of Cornish cuisine, making the most of fresh local produce fished, farmed and foraged nearby. From hearty soups to fresh, flavourful salads, there’s plenty to delight in if you’re looking to make 2025 the year of healthy living.

Go 0%

If the overindulgence of the festive season has taken its toll, there’s no better time to press pause on the parties and opt for an alcohol-free alternative for Dry January and beyond…

Avoiding alcohol can improve your health, mood, sleep, blood pressure and skin, as well as reducing your chances of heart disease, liver disease and strokes.

While you’ll always find 0% tipples behind the bar at The Falmouth, we also highly recommend a trip to The Working Boat pub below decks at The Greenbank. Connoisseurs of local brews and craft beers, their range of sober sips is certainly worth a look.

Their 0% collection includes Shorebreak hazy pale, Lucky Saint, Lucky Saint hazy IPA, Adnams Ghost Ship 0.5% ale, Corona, and Rattle cider, with Nowt Peculiar arriving soon.
