Ten Reasons to Visit Falmouth This Autumn

September 18, 2024 | News

Surrounded by stunning coastlines and hidden gems, autumn in Falmouth promises an abundance of joy, relaxation and excitement.

1. Museums and Art Galleries

Rainy autumn days provide the perfect opportunity to visit some of Falmouth’s indoor museums and art galleries. The award-winning National Maritime Museum is a must-see, with a special ‘Surf!’ exhibition running until the new year.

To continue your Falmouth voyage of discovery, plan a visit to The Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and The Falmouth Art Gallery, for inspiring exhibitions from Falmouth’s finest artists and creatives.

2. Autumn Sunsets

Situated on Cornwall’s south coast, Falmouth’s skies transition from blue to dreamy pastels most autumn evenings. Just footsteps away from The Falmouth, pack a blanket and head to Castle Beach to watch the skies unravel as the night draws in.

For an even more magical experience, grab your wetsuit and hire a paddleboard to soak up the sunset from the water. Warm up after with a hot drink in our Castle View restaurant.

3. The Shops

Take a stroll along Falmouth’s cobbled streets, and find yourself completely spoilt for choice. From independent shops and vintage caves, to quirky boutiques and high street favourites, find something truly special. Why not start your Christmas shopping early and treat your loved ones?

To get you started, we recommend Uneeka, Willow and Stone, Bean Hive, Love and Honour, Ondine Dash, and Jam.

4. Beerwolf Books

Tucked away from Falmouth’s main highstreet, you’ll find Beerwolf Books – a hidden gem providing the perfect retreat from the town centre.

Offering you the best of both worlds, Beerwolf Books is a quirky pub with its very own second-hand bookstore. Take a break from shopping and warm up by the fireplace with a pint or two, and a good read.

5. The Beaches

Falmouth boasts four gorgeous beaches, all well-connected by the south west coastal path. Even better, in autumn, the seasonal dog ban is lifted so your furry friends are welcome too. Castle Beach, Gyllyngvase Beach and Swanpool Beach are just a stone’s throw away from Falmouth town centre. Further afield, Maenporth Beach is perfect for exploring caves and trying watersports.

Why not brave a cold water sea swim? Afterwards, reward yourself with a hot drink and bite to eat at one of their beach cafes, open throughout autumn.

6. The Falmouth’s Seaside Haven

If you don’t fancy braving the Cornish waters, retreat to The Falmouth’s indoor oasis instead. Join us at our pool, sauna and spa for a day of relaxation, tranquillity and restoration. Guests have free, unlimited access to our pool and sauna, and non-residents are welcome at a small charge.

7. The Gardens

Falmouth is lucky enough to have some dreamy gardens flourishing nearby, each one perfectly enchanting at any time of year, even after the summer blooms have faded. With an unusually warm subtropical climate, Cornwall is home to many well-established gardens.

Explore the likes of Trebah, Glendurgan and Penjerrick Gardens, each one just waiting to let you in on its secrets.

8. The Princess Pavilion

With an Edwardian bandstand, sweeping sea views, and a children’s natural play area, The Princess Pavilion has something for everyone. Not to mention, it is a year-round entertainment venue, hosting live music, festivals, comedy, theatre, and several community events.

Keep an eye out this autumn for the annual Fal Beer Fest, and Falmouth Reggae Festival, alongside many other events.

9. The Cafes

On crisp autumn days, there is no better place to go than a cosy cafe, where you can unwind and watch the world go by. Falmouth is fortunate to have a highstreet lined with tea rooms and coffee shops, which entice visitors and locals alike.

We recommend Uppe Cafe and Bar, Planted, Good Vibes Cafe, and The Cornish Bakery.

10. The Events

Famed for its art, music and foodie scene, Falmouth’s bohemian atmosphere is a natural hub for events of all kinds throughout the year. This autumn, there’s something for all to dip their toe into:

  • 7th September – Charity Quiz and Feast Night at The Greenbank
  • 12th September – Wine and Cheese Evening at The Falmouth
  • 27th September – Fawlty Towers Comedy Evening at The Falmouth
