May 7, 2025 | News

Now celebrating 160 years since it first opened, join us as we head back in time to uncover the history of The Falmouth.

Affectionately known as the ‘Grande Dame of Falmouth’, our iconic landmark hotel stands as a testament to Cornwall’s rich Victorian heritage.

Opened on 9th May 1865, it was among the first purpose-built hotels in the town, designed to accommodate the influx of visitors following the extension of the Great Western Railway into Cornwall.

The hotel’s foundation stone was laid on 6th August 1863 by Robert Tweedy, with construction costs of around £9,000.

Its design features a blend of Victorian and French Renaissance influences, with a baronial-style hipped roof and classical detailing. The original T-plan structure was extended in 1890 by architect Silvanus Trevail, forming an H-plan layout.

Over the years, The Falmouth has hosted numerous notable figures, including royalty, authors, and celebrities.

One of its most charming connections is with Beatrix Potter, who wrote her first illustrated “picture letter” here in 1892, featuring sketches of local wildlife.

During significant historical events, the hotel adapted to serve the community. In 1917, it was requisitioned by the War Department and converted into a military hospital.

During World War II, the Admiralty camouflaged the building and used the top floor for offices.

In 2024, The Falmouth was acquired by the Cornwall Hotel Collection, returning to local ownership alongside The Greenbank and The Alverton.

Plans are well underway to restore and enhance its historic charm, ensuring it remains a cherished landmark in Falmouth. Fresh new interiors and exciting renovations are now unfolding, with a new 1865 Lounge and bar area, as well as a refreshed pool, sauna and gym space. A newly tarmacked carpark now offers parking with ease, and the new outdoor seating will mean a summer spent by the sea.

Today, the hotel boasts 71 individually furnished rooms, many offering stunning sea views, and is set within five acres of landscaped gardens.

It continues to offer a blend of historic elegance and modern comfort, making it a perfect base for exploring Cornwall’s scenic coast and rich heritage.
